Go-Kart Riding

I took these pictures at "The Park" during Ben's birthday party. I stood on the side of the track with the camera zoomed in and focused on the one place on the track I knew I could get clear shots and just waited for anyone I knew to show up in the frame. I think my approach worked pretty well! It wasn't until I zoomed in on the one of Brian and Luci that I realized just what I'd caught...

That's pure excitement on that face! And later Brian told me that every time he looked down at her she was grinning like that. I think she liked her first go-kart ride! This girl had no fear!

Science Coop

Our coop classes this month revolved around SCIENCE! It was my turn to teach and I had the younger group of kids (4-6 year olds). My trusty assistant, Gavin, and I did a number of fun experiments and hands on activities with the kids. We did baking soda & vinegar experiments, talked about absorption and did an experiment to determine what material was most absorbant, did "fireworks" in milk, a water color marker and coffee filter project, and we made ice cream in zip-loc bags. I hesitate to share all the pictures because the parents may not want them on a public blog, but here are a couple of Luci and Gavin (Ben was in a class for his own age group and unfortunately I did not get any pictures of that class since I was teaching Luci's)...

Here, she is working on her coffee filter art--watching the colors of a water-color marker seperate by adding drops of water.

Gavin is showing the kids how much water each of the items absorbed in the absorption experiment:

Luci is shaking her zip-loc ice cream while dancing to some fun kid's music. This project was a lot of fun, a lot of work for the moms, a lot of FROZEN hands, and a lot of mess...

But in the end it was the overwhelming favorite of all the kids!

Evaluations and a Birthday

With 24 weeks completed out of a total of 36 we are coming into the homestretch of our school year. It is about this time each year that panic grips me and I start to wonder if I've done the best job I could have for my children. My insecurities get the better of me and I worry that there will be cracks, gaps, or even black holes in their education. So today I spent a few hours pinpointing those areas that we need to put special emphasis on for the remainder of our school year. I also put together a 'plan of attack' so to speak, in order to make sure we address these needs.

For Gavin, that plan includes several areas that fall under the umbrella of Language Arts. He needs work on dictionary skills, letter writing (both friendly and business), state abbreviations, and titles of courtesy. He also needs to work on neatness, completeness, and efficiency (aka time-management) in all areas of his schooling. He has progressed very well this year in his writing abilities, including his research skills, and his use of punctuation and proper grammar. His math grades are also a vast improvement. Science is largely an independent study this year, with periodic oversight and some input from me. He keeps a science journal daily, writing (or drawing) what he's learned or observed and has documented all experiments or projects.

For Ben, my 'plan of attack' includes working with him to develop his sentence writing skills. He has a great imagination and will dictate wonderfully detailed stories to me, but he has a harder time putting his own words into writing. Ben's reading is still a bit choppy although he reads with a lot of inflection and emotion in his voice. He also needs a bit of work on self-correcting when he misreads a word. He also needs to learn a few basic skills items such as how to tie his shoes, his phone number, and his address.

Tomorrow (the 19th) is Ben's birthday. It's hard to imagine that 8 years and almost 9 months ago the doctor told us after an ultrasound that there was no heartbeat. Furthermore, a blood test revealed that the HCG levels were not increasing and therefore it looked like my pregnancy was not viable. A week later, before performing a D&C my doctor wanted to do another ultrasound "just in case". We were overwhelmed with joy and happiness when the ultrasound immediately showed us a wonderfully beating heart and a healthy, normal pregnancy. Ben is an amazing blessing who fills our lives daily with his gorgeous brown eyes, contagious laugh, and his super-sweet nature. He loves to make people happy and I'm so thankful that my doctor wanted just one more look. I can't imagine life without my Ben!

I Love Yooooooou!

A Valentine Conversation with Luci:

Me: What is Valentine's Day?

Luci: It's a day when you love one another with presents.

Me: Oh really? Presents, huh?

Luci: Yes, and CANDY!

ADHD

Ben had an appointment with the psychiatrist today. It's the first time we've been back since the end of summer. Five months of trying to manage the ADHD on our own has taught us that we simply cannot. In some ways I feel like a failure for this. I think we SHOULD be able to manage this on our own. After all we have a distinct advantage in being able to customize his school day, to provide just what he needs when he needs it. And somehow, whether it comes from the homeschool community, family, friends, media, or even the Christian community, there is a very real pressure to deal with ADHD without the use of medication. It isn't easy, however, and our days have become frustrating and exhausting. Not just for me though, it's extremely frustrating for Ben. He tries so hard but sometimes it seems as if there is a brick wall in front of him that he just can't get past no matter how hard he tries. And it is frustrating for Gavin and Luci as well.

Together with Ben's doctor, we have decided to put him back on medication. If you've been following for long you know already that Ben has had problems developing motor tics after being on ADHD stimulant medications. As a result we've tried many different medications all with the same result. The last five months have shown us however, that Ben has a tendency towards these tics whether on or off the medication. So, while the medication may aggravate the tics, it certainly isn't causing it. Ben's doctor has prescribed risperdal once again to try and control the tics. He will be on a 50% higher dose than before. He also will be taking Vyvanse once again. This is the ADHD medication that we used before with great success.

Please, once again, keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we try again to find the right balance for Ben.

There Are No Words

There are times in life when there just are no words. This is one of those times.

Ben's Calming Spot

Ben's karate instructor has the class participate in a calming activity at the end of each session. The kids sit quietly on their feet, with their eyes closed and with their backs straight they breathe deeply for a few moments. Brian talked with the instructor about Ben's anger and she suggested we attempt the calming activity at home. It's not a surprise that deep breathing is a calming exercise, after all it's used in meditation, child birth, and so on. But, it never occurred to us to use this to help Ben. We picked up exercise mats at the sports store this weekend, the kind that interlock (puzzle-like) and created Ben's calming spot.

This spot is Ben's alone. When he feels like he is getting angry this is where he can go to calm down before he loses control of his temper. Sometimes he has to be reminded to go there. Occasionally he will go on his own. I hope that eventually it will become a natural response for him to calm himself down before launching into an outburst of anger.

It was a beautiful day today and the temperature was so nice! The boys got out and rode their bikes for a while. Both boys got new bikes for their birthdays. Luci spent the afternoon playing in her Princess Castle with her baby dolls.
