Mid-Summer Heat and Some Random Thoughts

It is HOT! Let me rephrase that by saying, it is REALLY HOT! It's beyond iced tea on the front porch, beyond sitting in the shade or even going for an evening walk. Yesterday, at 6:30 pm the heat index (for those not from the south that's the actual temperature combined with the humidity level to produce a "feels like" temperature) was 106! That is at 6:30 pm!!

Because of the heat we've been indoors a lot. Either here at home, or out at a public place soaking up their Air Conditioning. We have the pool set up, but the temperature of the water in the middle of the day is like bath water. So, the only times we can really enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool is either in the morning or late evening. We've been making use of On Demand movies, Netflix, the Wii, and just playing with quiet indoor toys. Great summer vacation, huh? This is one of the reasons I've never minded schooling in the summer time. It's too blasted hot to do anything out there anyway! I'd rather have more time off in the fall or spring...

We had a great vacation earlier this month. We spent three days in Mobile visiting with family. My mom made a pot of Gumbo good enough to make you swoon. The kids helped her pick some veggies in her garden and we enjoyed the visit. We also made some time to visit a few friends and some other family members like my sister and her crew. After three days in Mobile we went to Gulf Shores where we rented a condo for three nights. The weather was spectacular the entire time we were there! The beach was gorgeous and the kids had fun playing in the sand and surf. I spent some time with my feet propped up and a good book in my lap (the newest John Grisham book!) while the kids fished with their dad. From the beach we went to DeFuniak Springs for two nights of camping Grammy and Gramps. More fishing, more reading, and a little bit of relaxing. We celebrated Brian's 40th birthday while we were there.

I spent last week moving all of last years school books to another bookshelf so I could bring in the new books to the school shelves. The shelves look great--for now--with the shiny new books in place ready for us to dig-in! I'm ready...but the kids aren't. It won't be long before the stores are full of back-to-school sales. Would you think bad of me if I admit I LOVE back-t0-school shopping? New pencils, colorful sticky notes, brand new spiral notebooks, fresh glue-sticks, stacks of paper.... Anyone wanna go shopping?

Until next time...
