The package we were sent includes a set of three Master Fractions, a workbook containing fraction activities and a Marvels of Measures poster. The Master Fraction 2 divides shapes into halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths. The Master Fraction 3 divides shapes into thirds, sixths, and twelfths. And the Master Fraction 5 divides shapes into fifths, tenths, and twentieths. Each Master Fraction has a set of clear overlays that demonstrate the division of the shapes into greater and greater denominators.
The workbook, for grades 1-5, contains approximately 55 pages of exercises to provide students the chance to exercise what they've learned. The exercises begin with simple exercises, such as dividing snack foods in half by drawing a line down the middle; and then progress on to more complex concepts such as adding and subtracting fractions, comparing fractions, and equivalent fractions.
Our Experience
I used Master Fractions primarily with my 4th grade son. He has had some experience with fractions and the current lessons in his regular math curriculum were related to fractions. The opportunity to enhance that with Master Fractions was too good to pass up! The clear overlays really made the concept of equivalent fractions much easier to understand.
I did not use the workbook with my 4th grader, however I did have my 6 year old work through the first several pages. The workbook is easy to understand and she had no trouble at all learning to divide things into halves, quarters, etc...
The Bottom Line
Master Innovations has created a product that simplifies (pun intended) fractions! Each set of Master Fractions sells for $17.95, the workbook sells for $15.95, and the poster for $10.00. The Master Fractions set is worth every penny, however the workbook and the poster are priced a little higher than I can justify. Some families, whose students truly struggle with fractions, might find the workbook worth the cost, however.
