Zoo School

In our early homeschool days we used to take frequent field trips to local zoos, museums, parks, and other places of interest. It's one of the things I love about homeschooling -- flexibility! As the kids have gotten older, however, it gets harder and harder to find the time to squeeze in those spontaneous trips. Today, we made the time. We took a trip to the local zoo and enjoyed the animals -- who were fairly active in the beautiful, sunny - but cool - weather.

As I sat looking through the photos of our trip it occurred to me that our day to the zoo wasn't necessarily a day off of school!

We studied geography -- Luci learned map-reading skills while she navigated us through the zoo.

We did math -- How many quarters is $1.50?

We studied history (the history of the zoo, that is).

We studied art -- Gavin and Ben were the photographers today and they did a great job working on composition in photography!

And of course we studied Science -- Zoology!

Primates (The baby, Mojo, is 2 years old)
Really big farm animals
Endangered animals
Deadly animals

And humans!

  2. What a fun day you must have had. After the terrible rain and storms of yesterday, the sunshine was probably most welcome! :-) Good pictures and lots of fun to go around. Oh, and a bit of learning thrown in for good measure.
