In my life this week...
My 20th high school reunion is in the planning stages. I'm actually thinking about going this year. I didn't go to my 10th reunion, but I'm not really sure I can pinpoint a reason why I didn't go. Maybe it was self-esteem, self-consciousness, or whatever. But I'm really at the point now where none of that matters. I know that some of my former class-mates might be more successful than others, but it helps to find my worth in how Jesus sees me rather than in what kind of car I drive or how big my house is.
In our homeschool this week...
We've actually had a very productive week. We finished everything on our schedule! That doesn't happen often. We got some caterpillars in the mail this week and the kids are watching them like hawks. They seemed to double in size overnight. We've been reading Carry On, Mr. Bowditch for our read aloud. This is our all-time favorite Sonlight read aloud (and we've read a LOT of read alouds!). We're also reading about Eli Whitney and the cotton gin.
Places we're going and people we're seeing...
Aside from the usual (and not so usual) church and extracurricular activities, it was a quiet week. That was much needed after the crazy week we had last week! This weekend my middle child is leaving with his grandparents for a trip to Washington, DC.
My favorite thing this week was...
On Wednesday afternoons Gavin has a piano lesson. For Ben and Luci, this means they need to bring along something to keep themselves occupied while we sit and wait for half an hour. Usually Luci brings things like crayons and paper, or her Nintendo DS, or even just a toy to play with. This Wednesday she asked if she could bring the Beginner's Bible and sit and read her Bible while we waited. It made this mommy heart melt!
What's working/not working for us...
Last week I purchased the download for the 2010-2011 Middle School planner from The Well Planned Day. It was significantly discounted, given the fact that most of the 2010-2011 school year is gone, but it was a small price to pay to get to use the product for the months of April, May, and June. We should definitely be able to judge whether this is a calendar/planner that is going to benefit Gavin with his time-management. I also ended up printing a page for Ben's work as well.
Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...
Do you homeschool year round or for a 9-month school year? Or something entirely different?
A photo, video, link, or quote to share...

She is the cutest little bug I've seen in a long time! Can't wait to see you all tomorrow. Can you believe it's time already?? We are excited about the trip and hope everything works out, including NO government shut down, which could throw a small wrench in our plans for DC. But not to worry...we have a Plan B....just in case. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit to your blog - and may I say, I love your layout! I grew up in the suburbs of D.C. and one day, I hope to bring my kids back! Hope your son has a fabulous visit to the nation's capital - so much to see and do! Per your question, I homeschool year-round. We'll be having our longest break in the month of July (probably the whole month!). So I'll end my children's levels June 30th and begin fresh in early August. Nice to meet you!!

Yes, those caterpillars do seem to double in size overnight! Ours just emerged from their chrysalids this week, all five of them!!
ReplyDeleteWe loved Carry On, Mr. Bowditch! It ranks up there as one of MY favorite read alouds so far...
I like the IDEA of homeschooling year-round, but it never seems to work out. We have so many other activities going on in the summer...
I love Sonlight! I will have to check out this book. I live in the suburbs of Washington DC in Maryland (about 50 minutes). I hope your son sees all the cherry blossoms around the tidal basin.
ReplyDeleteI went to my 10th reunion then we didn't have a 20th. I hope you have fun. The picture is cute.

You'll have to keep us updated on that Well-Planned Day planner. I've considered using it, but not sure really about whether it would benefit our homeschool schedule or not.
ReplyDeleteFound your blog via The Homeschool Chick and stopping by to say hi!
