The Homeschool Mother's Journal #10

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week...
It's hard not to be a little bit envious of all the families who are finished with school already! This is probably the only month of the year that I wish we did school for a traditional 9 month school year.

In our homeschool this week...
Another week closer to being finished!

From diagramming participial phrases, to understanding possessive pronouns, to underlining root words our grammar work for the year is almost finished. We're also finishing up in our other language arts areas: spelling is finished, handwriting complete, and vocabulary workbooks are almost done.

With those subjects finished we'll devote more time to finishing up science & math and tackle the last writing assignments.

Ben finished reading his book report book, Titanic Crossing, and will be working on his cereal box book report next week. He's actually EXCITED about a book report! This should be great!

We did a few fun science experiments this week. You can read about those here.

Places we're going and people we're seeing...
We have plans next week for a field trip to the Audobon Insectarium. New Orleans is about a 3 hour drive from our home, so we are just making this a day trip. I've been wanting to take the kids ever since I heard about this place and since we are studying insects, could there be a better time? We are taking a favorite cousin along on the trip with us so the kids are really excited about it!

My favorite thing this week was...
A fairly mundane week ended with two outstanding events. A mamma's always proud of her kids, but on days when they shine that turns into a heartfelt joy. This week two of my kids had their moment in the spotlight.

My oldest child had his first piano recital. I love how passionate he is about music!

I watched my youngest, my brave little girl with a pink feather in her hair, perform her kata in a room full of people as she tested for her blue stripe on her yellow belt.

And the third, well, while he may not have had a moment in the spotlight (this week anyway), he still had a moment to shine and make his momma proud. I loved seeing how encouraging and supportive he was to his siblings, even helping his sister fine-tune her kata before her karate belt test...and he never once indicated he envied their time in the spotlight.

How do I pick a favorite thing out of that?

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...
Our 2011-2012 year is planned out. Take a look here and tell me what you think!

  1. It's so nice to see what everyone is planning on using next year. And how nice of your oldest to help his siblings; you must be doing something right!

    Stopping by from THMJ!

  2. Funny, my kids are in public school and this is their last week of school and I am envious of you homeschooling!! We are so excited to be done with public school and not be on the August - May schedule, but do school year round. Don't be too jealous. It's not that great. thanks for this blog. It's helping me as I get started. Dayna
